Tips for finding a lost Pet

Tip: Use your cell phone to exchange pictures of pet by text message.
Develop a lost pet plan. Be calm! Start looking immediately.

  • First search your property thoroughly.
  • Make noise while you walk around the neighborhood. (Call your pet's name and whistle)
  • Use your pet's favorite toy that makes a noise.
  • Use scented articles (clothing) outside your home to attract your pet.
  • Use a powerful flashlight checking dark places.
  • Leave out food and water for your dog.
  • Advertise - Make flyers with your animal's picture, date and place your pet was lost, breed of dog, sex, age, identifying marks, reward, and your telephone number. Use heavy weight and high visibility paper. Post on telephone poles, traffic intersections, grocery stores, pet shops, churches, laundromats, school bulletin boards, veterinary offices, community centers, animal control, animal shelters, convenience stores, pizza parlors, etc.
  • Make out post cards and mail to homeowners.
  • Place advertisements in newspapers.
  • Visit animal control and animal shelters.
  • Contact rescue organizations in your area.
  • Walk the neighborhood, leave your flyers with neighbors.
  • Talk to postal carriers, garbage collectors, newspaper carriers, kids in the neighborhood, and ask them to keep an eye out for your pet.

  • Contact the street department to see if your animal was hit by a car. Municipal street department 314-615-1111, highway and interstate 340-4100.
